Glen Lake Schools forest land debate highlights challenge of affordable housing solutions

LEENANAU COUNTY, Mich,. (WPBN/WGTU) — Three hundred of Michigan’s school district have their own community forests.
It’s part of the state’s 1931 Community Forest Act which authorized the Department of Natural Resources to deed land to school districts as long as they were used for recreation or forestry purposes.
Glen Lake Community Schools in Leelanau County, may have an opportunity to use some of its land to solve a housing crisis for its staff.
In December, Sleeping Bear Gateways Council members were supposed to present an idea for workforce housing using 40 acres of the school’s 180 acres of forest land.
